In most of these examples, I favor the "incorrect" form.
- Don't end sentences with prepositions.
"Incorrect": Is this the restaurant you were talking about?
"Correct": Is this the restaurant about which you were talking?
- Don't split infinitives.
"Incorrect": To boldly go where no man has gone before.
"Correct": To go, boldly, where no man has gone before.
- Don't “dangle” participles.
"Incorrect": Speaking of beauties, here comes one now.
"Incorrect": But, lying in my bed, everything seemed so different.
Is there a "correct" way to say these things with the same meaning?
- Use “may” for permission and “can” for
ability.
"Incorrect": Can I borrow your notes?
"Correct": May I borrow your notes?
